If it had been anyone else, he wouldn’t have answered the phone.

He was technically supposed to be on vacation. Granted his vacation consisted of locking him and Lois in her apartment above the Talon and not answering the door or their phones for a week, but that didn’t mean their phones got turned off. There were such things as emergencies that were serious enough to take the place of Lois, even though he really liked her. He did. But they were still feeling out whatever this was, and the name that flashed across the caller ID wouldn’t have called unless he was in a big pile of deep shit.

Alaric Saltzman was a pretty with it hunter. He was capable and he knew what he was doing, and Dean wouldn’t have left him alone all those years ago if he didn’t think so.

Lois was still asleep next to him when he heard the buzzing of his phone against the bedside table. He reached over, looked at the name, and answered without a second thought. He pulled away from Lois gently, grabbing his pants and getting to his feet, lodging the phone between his shoulder and his ear.

“Alaric Saltzman. There’s a name I thought I’d never see again.”

“Believe me, I wouldn’t have called if it wasn’t important.” The guy sounded tired, more so than usual, and Dean pulled away from the bedroom, and went about making himself a cup of coffee. “But I could really use an expert eye on this.”

“What have you got?”

There was a long pause before he spoke. “I have a hybrid problem.”

“Hybrid?” Dean frowned. “Hybrid what?”

“A hybrid between a vampire and a werewolf?” he sighed. “And it’s not just any hybrid, he’s the ‘Original’ hybrid—the first of his kind.”

“Even the first of his kind can still be killed by having his head taken off,” Dean replied as he took a sip. “But I take it he’s not your only problem.”

“There are hybrids and vampires all over town. I can’t handle this one alone.”

“Alright. Let me grab Sam and we’ll see what we can do.” He took his coffee and moved down the counter, finding the pad of paper Lois kept there. “Where are you at?”

“Mystic Falls.”

Mystic Falls?” he frowned looking up from the pad to the window. “Ric, you don’t need back up, you need to move.” Everyone who was paying attention knew that Mystic Falls was nicknamed ‘Vampire Town’ for a reason. Regardless of what happened, they always seemed to wind up waist deep in crazy crap.

“I can’t,” he replied simply. “There are people counting on me in this.”

Dean sighed heavily, before shaking his head. “Yeah, I know how that goes. Alright. We’re about two days out, so I’ll call you when we’re getting close.”

“Thanks, Dean.”

“No problem.”

After leaving a quick message for his brother, he slowly made his way back to bed, shedding his jeans again and sliding back into bed next to her. He took a deep breath, wrapping an arm around Lois before pressing a kiss to her shoulder.

“You’re gonna be mad.”
