Ruby was pissed off.
She was pissed off and she was frustrated, and there wasn’t anything she could do about it. Sam needed to stop fighting her and start helping her, but until that happened, she wasn’t going to get anywhere on getting Lucifer out. She knew it would take time for Sam to get over his brother’s death, but they were running out of time. Dean had already broken the first seal and now they didn’t have long before the angels figured out what they had done and went to try and fix it.
She needed to make sure she could keep Sam under her thumb. Sex was a start, pulling demons dry was a start, but she needed to get him drinking, and he wasn’t succumbing to that as easily as she would have liked. So when she started to hit that frustrated stage harder than warranted dealing with Sam, she went to take it out elsewhere. Sam needed to be handled with kid gloves.
Demons did not.
She found a collection of them outside a small farm town in Kansas, and by the time she was finished with them, they were a collection of bodies, and Ruby felt a little better. She lit them all on fire so they wouldn’t be found, and then moved on to the nearest coffee shop to wait for Sam. She had left him a note to meet her later, and now all she had to do was wait. She settled onto a chair with a Danish to wait and try to regain the drill sergeant attitude that she knew Sam needed. Even if she was really starting to get sick of it.

Then again, between Maxima and what she'd said about Lois, maybe he was just looking for something to distract him. Part of him regretted staying while he sent the queen back to her home planet of Almerac, but his place was here, and apparently, with Lois. Clark wasn't so sure. Maybe he was attracted to her, and maybe they had some kind of connection, but those things didn't necessarily equal a relationship. He wasn't interested.
Clark walked into the Talon, intending to unwind with a cup of coffee and some apple pie. He sat at the bar, loosening his tie a bit as he put in his order. When the barista turned to do her job, he took a glance around, just out of habit, quickly noticing the brunette with the Danish. He knew pretty much everyone in this town and he'd never seen her before.
He definitely would have remembered her if he had.
His refreshments arrived rather quickly, and when they did, he decided to take initiative. She shouldn't have to sit alone.
He took his cup and plate in hand and made his way to her table. "Excuse me," he said with a polite grin. "Is this seat taken?"

There was something about him that wasn't quite right. She couldn't quite put her finger on what it was, but she was willing to find out. She straightened, before shaking her head.
"Knock yourself out."

"Clark Kent."

He was hoping the answer would be no.

"Just stopped to grab a snack. I'm waiting for a friend."
no subject
Probably not, considering the day he's had.
He washed down his pie with a sip of coffee. "Where are you headed?"
no subject
"Not sure yet. Just not here."
no subject
Oh well. It was a long shot anyway.
"I guess I can't blame you."

"Look, it's nothing about the town. We're just looking for work, and -- this place doesn't exactly fit the bill."
no subject
"Metropolis isn't far. You might try there."
His suggestion had nothing to do with the fact that he worked there. Nope. He was just a guy in a small town coffee shop eating pie.
no subject
"I'll keep that in mind."
no subject
Though he kept getting a whiff of something that wasn't too pleasant.

"So. Lived here your whole life?"

And she won't give him much of a chance to respond before she disappears into the crowd and is gone.
